Best Non – Toxic Natural Deodorants

Now that Summer is upon us, I think it’s time to address embarrassing facts about our bodies. Let me start start by saying it’s natural and even healthy to sweat. In fact, sweat helps by:

boosting energy

maintaining healthy weight

defending against many diseases and health conditions

improving mood

promoting good sleep

detoxing heavy metals

eliminating chemicals

promoting bacterial cleansing

Perhaps, with all the social distancing rules in place, we have nothing to worry about! But on a more serious note, no one wants to be around a sweaty person. So, we turn to antiperspirants for help. However, it’s not news anymore that many of the deodorants on pharmacy shelves contain ingredients that are harmful to our health. The main ingredients to look out for and avoid are:

Aluminium

Aluminium-based compounds are used as the active ingredient in antiperspirants. These compounds clog sweat ducts that stops the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface. Some research suggests that aluminium-containing underarm antiperspirants, which are applied on the skin near the breast, may be absorbed by the skin and have estrogen-like (hormonal) effects. Because estrogen can promote the growth of breast cancer cells, some scientists suggest that the aluminium-based compounds in antiperspirants may contribute to the development of breast cancer.

Parabens

There are many different parabens, which are used as preservatives in deodorant. Research suggests some parabens may interfere with the way your body produces and regulates estrogen and other hormones.

Triclosan

Cosmetic manufacturers add this chemical to prevent bacterial contamination, and to kill bacteria on the surface of the skin. Some animal studies have linked triclosan to unusual hormone activity. More research suggests triclosan could mess with your microbiome or the day-to-day operations of your genes.

Phthalates

These compounds help deodorant stick to your skin. They also appear to disrupt “androgen function,” or affect hormone testosterone production.

Fragrance

“Fragrance” or “Perfume” can cause allergies or skin irritation.

Natural Deodorants and Antiperspirants

The unfortunate thing about natural deodorants, is that they just don’t seem to work that well. Out of all the brands I have tried so far, I have only three winners:

Kiehl’s

Kiehl’s remains my number one, even though it’s not completely natural! It withstands even the hottest weather. Unfortunately, it does contain a small amount of Aluminium Chlorohydrate, which is a gentle, yet effective aluminium salt. According to a study, your body absorbs only a tiny fraction (0.012%) of aluminium chlorohydrate when applied under arms. So, considering it does not have any other toxic ingredients, it seems relatively safe to use.

Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant

I love the cooling sensation this deodorant gives and how it glides across my skin. It’s not as effective as Kiehl’s though, but it does smell and feel great. I wouldn’t recommend it if you are likely to be somewhere you would naturally sweat a lot. Probably more suitable for winter months.

Santa Maria Novellа

The pharmacy Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novellа — one of the oldest in Italy and the world. The products are manufactured according to old recipes from Italian monks using all natural ingredients and herbs.

This one is probably in between Kiehl’s and Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant. It’s quite sweat resistant (not as much as Kiehl’s), but if you want to go completely toxin free, it’s the slightly better option to the Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant.
