PEPTIDES AND COLLAGEN - Everything You Need To Know
PEPTIDES AND COLLAGEN – Everything You Need To Know
WHAT ARE PEPTIDES?

Certainly not a new concept in the beauty industry.  In fact, the ability of peptides to improve signs of aging have been known and researched for over 30 years. Many cosmetic companies incorporate them in their anti-ageing products promising to turn back the clock. However, many of us still don’t know what peptides are and how they work when it comes to skin rejuvenation.

The main reason they remain on our anti-aging pedestal is that they help us to produce more collagen. As most of you already know, it’s collagen that keeps our skin supple, smooth and free of wrinkles (our dermis layer is made up of more than 70% collagen). Unfortunately, our body stops producing collagen in our mid to late 20’s.  After age 30, our collagen levels drop 1%-2% every year. By age 40, we lose 10%-20% of our collagen. At 50, we are down to 20%-40%. By the time we hit 60 – well, you get the picture. It isn’t pretty.

Now for a little bit of biology. Collagen is a protein consisting of a long chain of amino-acids. This chain eventually breaks down into many short segments, and these are known as peptides. These send a “message” to our body that it has lost collagen and needs to generate more. Basically, without peptides, our skin wouldn’t know that it needs to supply more collagen. So it’s actually because of these little messengers, that our skin remains intact.
When you apply peptides topically, you trick your skin into thinking that your collagen has broken down, and in response, your body “manufactures” new collagen.

USE OF PEPTIDES IN TOPICAL SKINCARE

Despite carrying a large molecular weight, research shows that some topical peptides penetrate our skin very well. They have a remarkable ability not just to reduce wrinkles but also to repair scars and even improve skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. They even remain beneficial when they stay on the surface of our skin, by sending chemical messages to cells, without even having to penetrate the skin at all.

But before you rush to the skincare counters in search for products containing peptides, please keep in mind that not all peptides are born the same. Peptides significantly vary, due to their different properties and potencies. Moreover, peptides alone wouldn’t solve all your skin-care problems. Therefore, to maximize their potential, look for products combining peptides with other. And by no means believe overblown promises that when applied topically they can replace cosmetic procedures and keep you young forever. Having said that, I think peptides are brilliant and when using the right product you can definitely achieve great results.

I have never heard of peptides. I didn’t know they were used in skin care and they help improve the signs of aging. That is cool that they help produce more collagen in our skin. Thank you for all the information!
